Many young girls have fallen prey to men who give them money and other material things in exchange for a hand in marriage or unprotected sex. Sadly, many girls have been exposed to a number of Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) challenges because of such escapades.
Malawi continues registering increased cases of unintended teen pregnancies, child marriages, and shockingly high prevalence rate of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) including HIV among young people. It is against this background that, Tiyanjane Girls Club that was established under Marriage NO Child’s Play Project which YONECO implemented in Mangochi and Mchinji with support from Simavi, is being commended for economically empowering its members in order to evade such problems.
Tiyanjane Girls Club is among the groups that creating a model and the group ably showcases how young people can generate income through Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA) and establishments of small scale businesses.
Tiyanjane girls clubs is one of the clubs which was given a seed fund of K210,000.00 to invest in small scale businesses. The girls started the business of selling wrappers (Dzitenje) and kitchenware in their area. Shortly, their businesses were known in every corner of their area and their merchandise fly off the shelves.
The group has accumulated a lot money in profits so much that the members are able to pay tuition fees, buy necessary school materials and ably meet other basic needs. The members of the club indicated that with their current financial stand, no one could lure them with money or other materials into sex or marriage.
